Lochaber property boom fuelled by degree course

Lochaber property boom fuelled by degree course

"An increase in Lochaber students is contributing to a property boom which bucks the national trend, according to the area's largest estate agency" - Press & Journal News Article, Thursday October 6 2011

The revelation will come as further good news to those in the Highland property market after it was revealed last week that house prices in Inverness have increased faster than any other European city over the past decade.

Estate agents have noticed the increase since a four-year Honours degree course was introduced at the lochaber campus of West Highland College UHI.

Estate agent Claire McAlpin from MacPhee & Partners, who currently have around 180 properties for sale in the Highlands, said she had sold more Lochaber properties in the past two months than during the previous six. She said:

" The past two months have bucked the trend and things are starting to get very busy again. It's definitely at the lower end of the market that we've noticed sales have gone up. We've noticed it because that's the end of the market that has really suffered in the recession, presumably because people are having more problems getting mortgages. We've seen a huge number of inquiries, first of all for rental properties from the parents of students and then when people realise there are limited rental properties available, more and more parents are now investing in property to buy for the period of study. It will affect the rest of the market because when people sell, they tend to move up a level, so we're starting to see things moving again"
